Last year’s 2016 Fourth of July Weekend event attracted over 200 plus runners in conjunction with the 36th annual Ellwood City Arts, Crafts, and Food Festival. This year’s race will happen on July 1, 2017, starting at 9:00 A.M. Ed Leymarie, the race’s organizer for 35 years, said planning starts with seeking sponsors in early January — and the love and support of Ellwood City residents help keep the 10K going. “Generations have now run this,” said Leymarie. “I think it will keep going for years to come.”
The 2015 and 2016 reigning champion and overall winner was Doug Petrik, 34, of Ellwood City with a
time of 35:00. Petrik, who has been running the race for eight years, said he
would not miss the event for anything. He said he started practicing on the 2016
race route in December. “It’s the highlight of the summer,” said Petrik. Petrik states he will be back to defend his back to back 1st place finishes.
The 10K race, approximately 6.2 miles returned to its original route in 2016. A detour route was needed in 2015 due to construction on the Second Street overpass. Racers will again started and finish at the Veterans Memorial Swimming Pool in Ewing Park. From the pool, runners crossed the Ewing Park
Bridge and went around Pittsburgh Circle to Second Street over the Second Street overpass. Runners will then proceeded to Crescent Avenue, Lawrence Avenue and Fifth Street. From there, they made their way down Orchard, Hazel, and Wampum avenues before hitting Jefferson Avenue on their way to the finish
Volunteers needed for water stop locations.
There are hundreds of people along the course and at the finish to cheer on the runners.
